Sagal is the 5th of five siblings from a showbiz family. She was born in Los Angeles on January 19 1953. She was the daughter of Sara Zwilling, was a singer (stage as Sara Macon),[3producer and television writer , who died from heart disease in the year 1975, and Sagal's father, Boris Sagal, worked as a director of television. She was born to Ukrainian Jewish immigrant. Her maternal grandparents were Amish. Sagal's father Marge Champion (dancer/actress) married Sagal around 1977. The wedding took place just few years after he died accidently on the set of the miniseries World War III. [2][6][7() Sagal had three of her four siblings act as actresses. Jean Sagal, her older twin sister as well as Joey Sagal are her brothers; David Sagal, her attorney husband to McNally Sagal was her other brother. Sagal and her family were brought up in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
